Kaieteur News – Twenty-six-year-old Ryan Headley, called ‘Wine’ and ‘Red Wine,’ drowned on Wednesday while bathing in a river at Lime Tree Backdam, Region Seven.
According to reports received by this publication, Headley, a father of one from Catherine, Mahaicony, had gone to the river with a group. During the swim, others noticed he was struggling to make it across.
A video seen by this publication showed Headley battling to stay afloat as the others swam back in his direction. Information received suggests that Headley got tired and was making attempts to return to the shore but failed to do so.
Kaieteur News was informed that the body has been recovered. This publication was informed that the young man had ventured into the interior regions of Guyana in pursuit of betterment but he was a good swimmer, having worked at sea on several occasions over the years.
During a brief interview with Headley’s common-law wife Vidika Stephen, she told this publication that she was told “he went in the river to bathe with some people.”
Stephen described Headley as “a really good person and a great dad,” to their two-year-old son. Headley appeared to be well-known across communities.
