Kaieteur News – A 58-year-old vendor was on Wednesday remanded for assaulting the mother of his child, causing her actual bodily harm.
The accused, Dioram Narine, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Narine pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on August 25, 2025, on Queen Street, Georgetown, he assaulted Dakota Agard causing her actual bodily harm.
The prosecution had no bail objection. The court heard that Narine and Agard once shared a relationship and have a child together. On the day in question, the woman contacted the defendant in connection with something for the child. There was a verbal exchange, after which Narine dealt the woman several lashes with a bicycle bar causing her injures. The matter was reported and an investigation was carried out.
Agard, when given the opportunity to speak, said the only reason she maintains contact with Narine is because of their daughter and asked that he stays away from her.
Meanwhile, Narine said “the child is bound to me by spirit and not by law. It is not legal,” noting that there is no relationship between him and Agard. He further requested that the court order a DNA test to confirm the child’s paternity.
Magistrate Latchman denied Narine bail due to the serious nature and prevalence of the offence. The matter was adjourned to September 26, 2025.
