Kaieteur News – A taxi driver was on Wednesday remanded after pleading not guilty to two counts of larceny.
Kelvin Thomas of Lot 13 Norton Street, Lodge, Georgetown, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on August 22, 2025, at Avenue of the Republic and Regent Road Georgetown, Thomas stole one gold chain valued $285,000 from Lucille Reynolds.
It is also alleged that Thomas on August 23, 2025, at Croal and Longden Streets, Stabroek Georgetown, he stole one gold band valued $175,000 from Shadyah Kayum.
The taxi driver asked not to be remanded, since he has no knowledge of this incident. He noted that he has a young child and one on the way, and also takes care of his grandmother.
The prosecution objected to bail due to the serious nature and prevalence of the offence, and the need to preserve public safety.
It said on August 23, Kayum was at the corner of Croal and Longden Streets with her boyfriend, when Thomas approached her and relieved her of her gold band.
The prosecution said the incident was captured on CCTV footage and the accused was identified, located and arrested.
Thomas was told of the allegation and he reportedly said “when I hear yall looking for me I went and collect back de band and I went by troy for a number fo call yall.”
The court also heard that Reynolds was at the number 44 bus park in a bus. As the bus pulled off, Thomas took Reynolds’ chain off of her neck, prompting her to pursue him but he successfully escaped.
The woman made a report and during a photo identification parade, she was able to identify the accused.
Thomas was denied bail. The matters were adjourned to September 17, 2025.
