Kaieteur News – The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has recorded 83 percent voter participation after the Joint Services members cast their ballots last Friday.
This was revealed by Deputy Chief Elections Officer (DCEO) Aneal Giddings during a press conference held on Monday. He explained that the turnout by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) was 2,575 of 3,100 eligible ranks, Police: 5,727 of 6,909 eligible ranks and Prison Service: 397 of 466 eligible officers voted.
According to Giddings, the 83 percent represents an increase in the voter turnout for the Armed Forces which saw an 81.8 percent participation in 2020. Chief Election Officer, Vishnu Persaud told reporters that the Disciplined Services voting was conducted well, minus a few early morning glitches in the system that were addressed.
He explained that the ballots of Disciplined Services members are usually sorted and sent to the various districts of those who cast their ballots for intermixing with the rest of ballots on election day when the rest of the country votes. “We have gazetted the list of polling stations where those ballots will be intermixed on election day, which is 1st September. So those ballots will be counted in the respective district where the officers are registered to vote.”
