Kaieteur Sports – The West Indies Youth selectors have announced a fourteen-man squad to engage Young Sri Lanka in a five-match youth One Day Internationals in Antigua from August 25, 2025.
Among the selectees is Demerara Cricket Club all-rounder Jonathan Van Lange.
Statistician Charwayne Walker informs, Van Lange selection will continue a tradition of Demerara Cricket Club players that had the distinct honour of representing the West Indies at the under nineteen level.
The first player associated with the Demerara Cricket Club that wore the maroon cap for the West Indies at the under nineteen level was Sydney Matthews who toured the United Kingdom with the Dudnath Ramkessoon led team in August 1970.
The late Charles Lloyde was selected in the 1972 West Indies under nineteen squad to face the touring Australian test team in 1973, but he migrated to the USA before that encounter.
Mark Harper and the late Andrew Lyght were part of the Timur Mohamed led West Indies under nineteen team that engaged young England in a one-off youth test and youth ODI at the Queen’s Park Oval in August 1976.
Keshore Persaud toured the United Kingdom with the Austin White led West Indies under nineteen team in August 1978.
Present DCC President, Roger Harper, played an integral role when the Marlon Tucker led West Indies under nineteen team trounced Young England in the Caribbean in January 1980.
Roger Harper was the man wearing the captaincy arm band when the West Indies Under nineteen humbled Young England 1982 in the United Kingdom.
Keith Semple toured Canada with the Sherwin Campbell led West Indies under nineteen in August 1989.
Rayon Thomas and Vishal Arjune toured the United Kingdom with the Brenton Parchment led West Indies under nineteen team in July 2001.
Trevon Griffith was the opening batsman when the Andre Creary led West Indies Under nineteen team participated at the 2010 ICC Youth World Cup in New Zeeland.
Keemo Paul and Tevin Imlach were key players when the Shimron Hetmyer led West Indies under nineteen team that won the 2016 ICC Youth World Cup.
Ashmead Nedd, Raymon Perez and Joshua Persaud participated at the 2018 ICC Youth World Cup.
Of the abovementioned Demerara Cricket Club players only Roger Harper, Keemo Paul, and Tevin Imlach have graduated to the test level. Will Jonahan Van Lange emulate this dynamic trio? Only time will tell.
The executive and members of the Demerara Cricket Club welcome him in maroon colors and wish him well in all his future endeavors.
