Guyana team with Colin Croft … just before leaving for Jamaica 1972. With Lance Gibbs (captain) and Stephen Camacho manager player.
Kaieteur Sports – Renowned cricket statistician Charwayne Walker has issued a respectful correction to a recent article by former West Indies fast bowler Colin Croft published in this newspaper.
In the piece, Croft recalled that legendary batsman Rohan Kanhai was Guyana’s captain when he made his senior debut in the Shell Shield against Jamaica in 1972. However, Walker has pointed out that historical records show otherwise.
According to Walker, it was Lance Gibbs, the celebrated Demerara Cricket Club off-spinner, who captained Guyana during that 1972 clash at Sabina Park. He further emphasized that Rohan Kanhai was not even part of the Guyana playing XI for that fixture.
Walker provided the full Guyana lineup to reinforce his correction: Roy Fredericks, Milton Pydana, Alvin Kallicharran, Leonard McRae, Randolph Ramnarace, Leonard Baichan, Sydney Matthews, Oitlal Munilall, Sew Shivnarine, captain Lance Gibbs, and debutant Collin Croft.
He also noted that, in official team announcements before the tour to Jamaica, Lance Gibbs had been named captain, with Stephen Camacho serving as team manager.
While acknowledging Croft’s distinguished contributions to Guyana and West Indies cricket, Walker stressed the importance of accuracy when documenting such historic milestones. “Facts matter, especially when preserving the legacy of our cricket,” Walker stated.
This correction not only preserves the integrity of Guyana’s cricketing history but also ensures that the record of Croft’s memorable debut remains true to the archives.
