People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) 2025 manifesto, the party’s presidential candidate Irfaan Ali
Kaieteur News – Ahead of the release of its manifesto today- President Irfaan Ali on Sunday unveiled that if reelected the PPP government will invest billions more annually to increase cash grants for children, pensions for the elderly, and public assistance.
He made the announcement during the party’s rally at Lethem, Region Nine. Ali disclosed that his party plans to increase the ‘Because We Care’ children’s grant from $50,000 annually to $100,000. In addition, there will also be a $100,000 transportation grant for students.
This means that each child will receive $200,000 annually. He noted that this will cost an additional $40 billion annually to implement. Currently, the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant is $50,000 per student in public and private schools, with a $5,000 uniform grant, bringing the total to $55,000 annually per school child.
Additionally, President Ali also announced that the old age pension will be increased from $41,000 a month to $60,000, promising that this would be the minimum increase. In addition, pensioners will receive a $50,000 transportation grant. He said the increased pension will cost about $65 billion annually, while the transportation grant will cost $4 billion. The PPP had previously increased old age pension from $20,500 in 2020 to the current $41,000.
Moreover, Ali said there are plans to increase public assistance from $22,000 monthly to $40,000. He said this will require $19 billion more. “This is not empty promises and empty bullets,” Ali said, underscoring that the announcements he made are the minimum increases the PPP is targeting. He also assured citizens that the PPP will deliver on its proposed increases.
These announcements follow remarks by PPP’s General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo, who noted that unlike the other parties making lavish promises on the 2025 campaign trail, his party has taken a different approach.
During an interview on Starting Point, Jagdeo was asked about the fiscal promises such as cash transfers being made by other political parties, while the PPP has been more cautious.
In response, the GS explained that the PPP has always been careful and deliberate about economic policies, as the party believes in sustainability. He said the other parties that have promised double or triple what the PPP has proposed are being unrealistic. Jagdeo said, “It’s never going to happen because we don’t have the resources to do that…you have to create wealth before you distribute it.”
In his address at the rally on Sunday, Jagdeo said the next PPP government will focus on investing directly in families and communities. He said that the 2020 to 2025 PPP term focused on building out infrastructure and creating opportunities. “The heavy lifting is done,” Jagdeo said, noting that the PPP’s next focus will be to help citizens directly. Jagdeo outlined incentives targeted to improve the lives of citizens, assist with housing, and support those who want to start their own businesses. These sentiments were reiterated by President Ali during his address.
