Dear Editor,
Only NOW the PPPC leaders are PROMISING to build the roads, build concrete drains and culverts and install street lights in Enterprise after 33 years in power! They have severely neglected that village.
Addressing a large gathering on Monday, President Irfaan Ali announced that more mobile security units and new police outposts will be established to strengthen law enforcement in the area. Why didn’t the government implement these ideas long before?
Actually, what Enterprise residents need are jobs, not just a $200 Million livestock mill to be built somewhere on the East Coast of Demerara as President Ali announced.
Since the closure of the historic Enmore sugar factory by the PNC-AFC coalition some 2500 sugar workers in Enterprise and Enmore have been unemployed. The PPPC government situated the regional hospital in Enmore which creates jobs for Enmore residents. Good for Enmore…but what about jobs for Enterprise residents?
Enterprise residents who were overwhelmingly sugar workers were strong loyal supporters of the PPP and GAWU and were discriminated against by the now defunct Sugar Industry Labour Welfare Fund (SILWF). All the streets of Enterprise were muddy for the duration of the PNC 28-year rule and full of pot holes with the stagnant drains being breeding grounds for mosquitoes and snakes.
The dilapidated wooden Community Center which is some 60 years old needs to be completely rebuilt with a concrete structure. The PPPC government to its credit has completely rebuilt Tipperary Hall and all streets in Buxton which is a traditional PNC stronghold.
Presently the Enterprise Primary School is overcrowded and beyond capacity. It needs an extension as well as refurbishing since the building was built in 1963 by the Cheddi Jagan PPP government of the 1960s.
The Ministry of Education should also consider establishing a secondary school in Enterprise as the village surroundings have grown 6 times its original size due to the distribution of house lots by the PPPC government. What was once rice fields has now been converted for housing
Sadly, prominent PPPC leaders only visit Enterprise just before election time and make grand vacuous promises.
With reports that Team Mohamed of WIN having family in Enterprise the ruling party which takes the village for granted could be in for a surprise come September 1st.
Sincerely,
Sultan Mohamed
