Kaieteur News – A man was on Friday sentenced to five years in prison for possession of cocaine while two others were remanded for the same offence.
The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) in a statement said Joel Leander was sentenced after pleading guilty to being in possession of over 5 kilograms of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. He was also fined $8 million.
Leander along with two other persons, Lorna Scott Williams and Satrohan Hardowar appeared at the Leonora Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Alisha George for the offence.
However, Hardowar and Williams pleaded not guilty and were remanded to prison pending trial.
Williams also faced a separate charge for another 3 kilograms of cocaine. She also pleaded not guilty to that offence.
The court was informed that in 2015 Williams and her husband were charged for possession of 3.8 kilogrammes of cocaine. They also had some 36 grammes of ganja in their possession at the time. The drugs along with a significant amount of foreign currency were seized.
In 2017, Williams’ husband was jailed 6 years for drug trafficking.
