Kaieteur News – Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo on Friday promised to upgrade more facilities, improve services and deliver more contracts to Berbicans if the PPP/C returns to office on September 1.
Jagdeo gave these assurances during a community engagement in the New Amsterdam community of Angoy’s Avenue, where he encouraged residents to align their votes with the government.
He outlined the PPP/C’s ambition to realise a “world class education system,” for Guyanese, noting that the cancellation of tuition at the University of Guyana for Guyanese students, as well as government’s sponsorship of eight subjects at the CXC examinations, is a definite step in that direction.
Touting better health care in the region, the VP referenced the construction of a new hospital for New Amsterdam, with plans also to upgrade the current regional facility.
He said while the government was able to increase the workforce in the township over the last five years, more jobs will be created in the administration’s new term. He also lauded the massive road expansion project across the country.
Already, some 100,000 streetlights were purchased, he disclosed, from which 4,000 were delivered so far. These are to be handed over to communities to tweak their outlook and lend to safer neighborhoods.
He acknowledged that many programmes are yet to be completed, but assured the community that should the party retain office, these will be diligently undertaken.
“In the next term, there are some things we have to get back to that we did not complete in this term.”
If reelected, the vice president pledged more contracts. Already, many contracts have been awarded for the construction and repair of roads, and for improvement to the drainage network in Angoy’s Avenue and other communities across the region.
“We have to get more contracts to people. A lot of people here have benefitted from contracts. In the next term, there will be probably twice as many, because we now have, once we complete the road network and all of these drains that you see here (and) across the country, we’re gonna move to building concrete drains. That would require a lot of labor-intensive works, lots of contracts given out to people to build the communities.”
The vice president’s Angoy’s Avenue engagement was part of a series of community meetings scheduled for Friday across Region Six to rally support for the PPP/C.
He was joined by Minister with responsibility for Finance and Public Service, Dr. Ashni Singh and party officials of the region.
