Kaieteur News – A 30-year-old operator was on Tuesday fined $35,000 for assaulting his partner.
The accused, Devon Reid of Lot 1225 Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden, appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Reid pleaded guilty with explanation to the charge which alleged that on August 10, 2025, at Kingston seawall, Georgetown, he assaulted Orpha Persaud.
The accused said he and Persaud had an argument over a phone issue which caused him to scramble her jersey and she retaliated in the same manner causing the issue to get out of hand.
“The argument ended up getting heated and we started cussing up one another,” Reid said.
The prosecution told the court that on the day in question, Persaud was at the seawall with her children when she was approached by the defendant who asked her for $60,000. She reportedly told him she did not have any, which caused him to slap and cuff her several times in her face.
Persaud said “he snatch me out the vehicle, I was sitting in the front passenger seat…after he ask for the $60,000 I say man I don’t have any money to give you I already paid the girl. After I told him that he try to snatch my phone and it fall and he snatch me out the vehicle and start slapping me up.”
She further shared that as a result of the incident, she ended the relationship and told him to move out of her house; those remarks made Reid angrier to the point where he pulled her and cuffed her in her face.
Reid was fined and failure to pay would result in one month imprisonment.
