Kaieteur News – Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand on Tuesday commissioned two new nursery schools in Region Two, one located at Mashabo and the other at Tapakuma Lake.
According to information provided by the Education Ministry, the nursey school which was commissioned at Mashabo was built by Rose’s Enterprise at a cost of $23,751,960. The school has an enrollment of 35 registered children and among its staffing there is a trained teacher.
The two schools are said to be part of the 67 nursery schools built in the country over the past three and a half years.
Speaking on the school project, Minister Manickchand shared that before the nursery building existed, children were being accommodated in a section of the primary school building.
“So, building a nursery school, they get their own space that is conducive to nursery learning. But the primary school also gets beautiful new space because they have moved out,” she related.
The Tapakuma Lake Nursery School was built by Triple P Construction & General Supplies for $25,377,804. The school has an enrollment of 17 children with three trained teachers.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the minister said while nursery education is not compulsory in Guyana the government is working to achieve universal nursery education.

Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand at Tapakuma Lake, Region Two, commissioning the $25M nursery school.
Having been declared by the United Nations (UN) as achieving primary education, the minister said “we have always struggled with access to secondary education and access to nursery education.”
“This school is built, and as you can see, it’s a beautiful building for 17 children. Many would have considered it unworthy, undeserving your community of a separate nursery school, because it’s only 17 children. To us, each child counts and we’re at a place where we’re now building schools for 17 children. And that should tell you that we’re very, very close to universal access, again, universal means all over access all over Guyana to nursery education. That means in every village, we will have children who can access a discrete nursery school,” Manickchand declared.
Like Mashabo, nursery-aged children in Tapakuma Lake were being accommodated in a classroom at the primary school.
Meanwhile, Minister Manickchand said that the percentage of trained teachers has increased in the hinterland from 43 per cent to 86 per cent, noting that once persons want to become a teacher and they have the qualifications, they will be trained.
She said that hinterland children are receiving all the resources being provided to the children in Georgetown while noting that hinterland teacher receive a $5,500 grant for supplies while on the coast, teachers receive $4,500 for each child.
