Kaieteur News – Today marks five years since D-Day in Guyana. Is when the nightmare of the attempted heist of democracy in Guyana was finally brought to an end. Is one ting fuh lose a election and walk out wid yuh dignity, but is another ting fuh try fuh hold a whole country hostage like it deh in yuh grandmother’s will.
Dem boys remember it like yesterday. One minute de vote count deh going smooth, next minute a man walk in wid a bedsheet and a Sharpie and seh, “This is de real result!” Like he was doing primary school Maths on de back of a biscuit box.
Dem had one lady waving papers like she summoning spirits. She tell people, “I declare victory!” But she ain’t even declare she lunch yet.
Then dem other one—de cool one—he seh, “Let’s allow the process to work.” De only process he was interested in was how to stretch five months of confusion into an Olympic sport.
And yuh know is who suffer most? Not dem fancy suit-wearing hustlers who been planning fuh hold on to power. Is poor people who sit down in limbo, can’t get lil job, can’t get lil help, and had to watch grown men and women behaving like spoiled schoolchildren.
And all de while, dem calling de press conference every day, saying de same stupidness. “We won! The spreadsheet seh so!”
Now five years pass, and dem same characters still trying fuh rewrite history. But de people remember. Dem remember who try fuh play Houdini wid democracy. Dem remember de gridlock, de games, de disgrace.
Dem boys seh, yuh can’t run a country like a cake shop. When yuh burn de cake, admit it and try again. Don’t try fuh tief de bakery.
Happy 5th anniversary to de day Guyana seh, “Not today, Charlatans. Not today.”
