Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – If the laws of Guyana truly state that buggery is illegal and punishable by imprisonment then why do the police and the chambers of the Attorney General not enforce the law? Instead we have reports of police officers arresting individuals and forcefully committing this illegal act.
We have reports of those in high office committing this illegal act on minors and we have reports of children being abused in schools by other students committing this illegal act. To make things worse, the Catholic Church in our country, which has a history of this illegal act being carried out on minors within its global organization and subsequently being covered up, has called for the anti-sodomy laws of Guyana to be disregarded.
At present the authorities have not been able to show that they can or are willing to enforce the laws that already exist. Is the safety of the non-homosexuals in our society of less importance? All heterosexual citizens should be able to rely on the law of the land being enforced and not have to worry about the previous dangerous crimes against heterosexuals being committed without prosecution. The aggressive nature of these crimes are of particular concern and to see that those in authority have done nothing to prevent it from reoccurring nor have they provided a clear deterrent for those who commit these heinous acts, brings much concern.
If the laws of the land are not enforced, additional sexual abuse and wickedness will take root. A sexually aggressive culture is very dangerous, especially if law and order is continually disregarded and corruption is rampant. The direction in which our society chooses to go on this issue will have long lasting consequences.
We must as a people carefully choose the foundation upon which we will build our nation. The stronger the morality of our society the stronger and more sustainable our future success will be. This is of more importance than financial strength, which can be very fleeting under weak moral conditions. History has shown this to be true on many occasions and if we desire a safe society to live in its morality must be such that it is both demanded and required.
With concern,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
