Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – It is my expectation that the upcoming elections, a mere five weeks away, will record the largest citizen participation in our history not only because of the ever-expanding official list of electors but also because of the critical nature of these elections for at least four reasons.
However, it is my belief that, the single most important factor, more important than ethnic and political party loyalty, manifesto bullet points and US sanctions, is the over-riding issue of public trust which is manifested in the spontaneous, overwhelming and growing reaction to the candidacy of Azruddin Mohamed and his WIN party in spite of ruling party attacks and US sanctions. Many believe that Mohamed, through his word and actions, prioritizes the interests of ordinary Guyanese in every community and not selective interests, local and foreign elites, or the politically connected and that he does not pursue national office for personal gain, nor inclined to public corruption and authoritarianism and that he is generous and works hard proving that he knows how to serve, to achieve and to succeed. This is the essence of the relationship between Mohamed and those that look to him for leadership and a reaffirmation of their rights and worth.
The 17th century English philosopher and statesman Francis Bacon made famous the saying that if the mountain will not come to Mohamed, Mohamed must go to the mountain. The story being told today is of a force seemingly greater than gravity which is pulling Mohamed and the mountain of supporters towards each other to create an effect which is transformative and cannot be stopped.
Sincerely,
Oscar Dolphin
