Kaieteur News – Attorney-at-law and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) candidate, Dr. Dexter Todd, has publicly defended his professional integrity following criticisms from the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), which he claims labelled him a “mediocre lawyer”.
Addressing supporters at an APNU public meeting held in Bagotville, West Bank Demerara, on Saturday, Dr. Todd, a newcomer to the political arena, used his first political address to speak on issues of injustice, victimization, and political retaliation.
During his remarks, Dr. Todd recalled what he described as a personal attack by Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, who referred to him as a “mediocre lawyer” during his weekly Thursday press conference. Todd believes this insult stemmed from his legal challenges against the government, particularly his involvement in the case of 11-year-old Adriana Younge. “One man called me on his Thursday’s programme, he called me a mediocre lawyer. I dare the PPP/C to bring the qualifications of any of their members, from the President come right down,” Todd said. “In this country, if you are not politically correct with your message, then you are an enemy of the government and an enemy of the PPP/C and therefore they come after you. It was an insult.”
Dr. Todd defended his qualifications by highlighting his extensive international legal experience. “I coordinate forensics for the entire continent of Africa, over 54 countries. A few weeks ago, I returned from Cameroon, and in a few weeks I will be in Gambia. I sit with ministers of government, police commissioners, and I bring experts in legal forensic research,” he stated. “Because I tell them the truth, they (PPP/C) don’t like that.”
He warned of a growing trend in Guyana where professionals are targeted for expressing independent views. “The thing about professionals in this country is the minute you go outside, qualify yourself, and come back, you’re expected to shut your mouth unless you’re with them. Otherwise, they’re coming after you,” he said. Dr. Todd assured supporters that such suppression would not occur under an APNU-led government. “We must respect professionals, we will respect opinions, and we will use them for the betterment of our country,” he added.
Dr. Todd went on to accuse the PPP/C of systematically undermining professionals and their contributions, claiming the party’s broader motive is to establish a one-party state. “They don’t respect professionals. They don’t respect professional opinions. They seek in every attempt, to undermine professionals in this country, because their motive is to create a one party state. If you’re not PPP, then you’re not right,” he declared.
In addition to concerns over professional victimization, Dr. Todd also criticised the PPP/C for what he described as the selective application of the law. He cited the case involving Local Government Minister Nigel Dharamlall, who was accused of raping a 16-year-old Amerindian girl, as an example of unequal legal treatment. “There will be no one Guyana when one of them is alleged to have raped an Amerindian girl and she is hidden from the lawyer, from everybody who wanted to help and she remains hidden until she changes her mind,” Todd said. “There is no one Guyana when you are accused of such an offense, sometimes a very trivial offense, and you have to spend 72 hours in the lock ups without bail .One Guyana is where all people under the law must be facing the same judgment. It is not where you protect your friends, your families and your colleagues from facing the law, but the ordinary man gets to face the full brunt of the law, “ he said.
Dr. Todd concluded by reaffirming the values of his party, stressing that the APNU and its constituent, the People’s National Congress (PNC), have consistently stood for fairness, equality, and justice. “The political philosophy of the PNC, which is equally a part of the APNU, has been solid. There has always been equality for people. There has always been fairness. There has always been justice. This is not a party of empty promises. This is a party that understands the needs of the people of this country,” Todd stated.
