Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – Demerara Bank punishes depositors for their political association with the Mohamed’s. The last time I checked, USA does not sanction individuals for political involvement or political association. Guyana is not a dictatorship; people are free to associate with any party or ideology. And so are Americans who can freely associate with any party.
Americans who do business with the Mohamed’s can be sanctioned. Non-Americans who do business with the Mohamed’s within Guyana cannot be sanctioned. They are subjected to sanctions if they engage in cross border business with USA companies. Therefore, Demerara Bank should not have cancelled the bank accounts of individuals based on personal or political association.
The individuals whose accounts are cancelled are not doing business with the Mohamed’s. And even if they do local business, they are not subject to sanctions. They are simply associating with the party founded by Azruddin Mohamed. The American government has sanctioned the Mohamed’s for not paying taxes to Guyana on gold shipments. The Mohamed’s did not violate USA laws. But the USA sanctioned the Mohamed’s. It is curious how and why they are sanctioned. The sanctions came about after Azruddin announced an interest in politics. Who in Guyana requested the sanctions? The behavior of the individual is very Putinesque. He is a vindictive dictator.
The same individual has directed Demerara Bank to cancel accounts of some individuals politically connected with Azruddin. That is not democracy. The ABCE countries must take note of the abuse of power in Guyana. Also, the elections cannot be considered to be free and fair if people are not free to associate with a party of their choice. The individual who is pursuing a policy of sanctions by the USA and locally by the bank must himself be sanctioned by the ABCE countries.
Yours truly,
Danny Ramnarine
