Kaieteur News – The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of Assistant Commissioner of Police Rafael Rose. Rose at the time of his death was Commander of the Region Nine police district and was reportedly travelling back to his post when he died on Thursday. Tributes poured in on Friday as the sad news spread.
Kaieteur News understands that an autopsy will be performed to determine his cause of death. According to the Police Force, Rose had traveled to Georgetown for meetings and returning to Lethem via road when he complained of chest pains.
“At that hour of the night, going to Kurupukari, the driver sought to speed up to reach medical for assistance, but this was not to be,” Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken said in a statement. “I was in contact with him via cell phone and his death is a painful one to us at this time, as he will surely be missed by all in the GPF,” Hicken said.
He said that Rose was not just an Assistant Commissioner of Police, but like a brother to him. Hicken said he and Rose worked together in the Georgetown Police division before being transferred to the Region Three division and then to Region Nine while noting that Rose managed Region Nine flawlessly. “Regardless of what the case in the region was, he handled it with efficiency,” Hicken said.
Similarly, Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Shalimar Ali Hack, SC. and her staff extended condolences on the sudden passing of Commander Rose. “Commander Rose has been a staunch supporter of the DPP’s Outreach Programme. Throughout the years, we have been conducting outreaches in Region 9; he always avails himself, his vehicles, and police ranks to accompany us wherever in Region 9 we go,” the DPP stated. “His passing is a real shocker to us at the DPP’s Office and we shall always be grateful for his thoughtfulness and assistance to us,” the DPP said in a statement.
