Taxi driver arrested for Mocha clothes vendor murder

Kaieteur News – A 42-year-old taxi driver was arrested on Sunday for the murder of 51-year-old Desiree Hyman of Lot 625 Mocha, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

Hyman was killed during a robbery at her stall located at Mocha on Friday.

The suspect was identified as Weedon Oudkerk from Paradise, East Coast Demerara (ECD). Oudkerk is one of the two suspects in the murder. He was arrested between 18:00 and 19:30 hrs.

According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), officers acting on information approached the suspect at Dennis Street, Sophia, Georgetown, where he was informed that he was wanted for Hyman’s murder.

Oudkerk was cautioned and denied having any knowledge of the offence and was taken to the Providence Police Station.

Hyman was selling at Lot 297 Mocha, EBD when she was allegedly robbed by masked men on a motorcycle.

According to police, two suspects approached the vendor on a motorcycle and attempted to rob her. Hyman reportedly fought the men and was shot six times. Police said the clothes vendor was shot three times in her left lower abdomen, twice in her right lower abdomen and once under her right breast.

The suspects made good their escape on motorcycle in a northern direction. Two 9mm spent shells and one suspected projectile were found about three feet away from Hyman’s body.
