Kaieteur News – The Ministry of Education on Thursday said that final preparations are being made for the opening of the new Brickdam Secondary School in Georgetown.
According to pictures posted by the ministry, Minister Priya Manickchand and her team visited the school where staff were setting up the classrooms and staff rooms.
The school is scheduled to be opened for the new school term in September.
In April, the minister announced that the old St. Mary’s School building located at the corners of Brickdam and Camp Street, Georgetown will become the new Brickdam Secondary School.
The decision to construct a new building to house the Brickdam Secondary School came following its deplorable condition. This forced the students and teachers to relocate to the East La Penitence Primary School in 2016. The school was initially located on Brickdam.
In 2023, Kaieteur News reported that the ministry signed six contracts totalling $560.7M to construct the St. Mary’s Secondary School building. It was disclosed at the time that the brand-new building will be a three-storey facility, with the upper flat of the building accommodating 10 classrooms, while the second flat will house 12 classrooms along with a Teachers’ Staffroom and a sanitary block.
The lower flat will be equipped with six laboratories (labs), including labs for Information Technology, Home Economics, and Industrial Technology, a canteen and the auditorium and is set to cater for some 600 students.
