Kaieteur News – A 51-year-old clothes vendor and mother of five was on Friday shot dead at first street Mocha, East Bank Demerara (EBD) during a robbery.
Dead is Desiree Hyman of Lot 625 Mocha, EBD.
Report reaching this publication was that the Hyman was selling at Lot 297 Mocha, when she was allegedly robbed by masked men on a motorcycle.
According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), two suspects approached the vendor on a motorcycle and attempted to rob her, however, she resisted, resulting in her receiving six gunshot wounds. Three to the left side of the lower abdomen, two on the right side of the lower abdomen and one under her right breast.
The suspects made good their escape on the motorcycle in a northern direction. The scene was processed and two 9mm spent shells and one suspected projectile were found about three feet away from the body. The area was canvassed, and several CCTV cameras were seen.
Daughter of the deceased, Ashanti Hyman told Kaieteur News that she was on her way to work when she received a call around 2:30pm informing her that her mother was shot. Hyman said she went to her mother’s place of business where she saw her lifeless body.
“I just hurry to come because I didn’t know what was going on, is like when I come in, my brother that is in there call and say mommy dead, mommy dead, she didn’t had nothing hay for dem to rob she, she ain’t had nothing hay for dem tek from she,” the weeping daughter said.
Ashanti added that her mother was a very peaceful and quite woman who always remained to herself and would not seek to have any problem with anybody. She also mentioned that her mother would go out to sell with little money and her jewelry.
The victim’s sister Karen told this publication that Hyman is the eldest for their mother. She shared similar sentiments with the daughter noting that her sister was a hard-working and quiet woman.
“Desiree is from Mocha and everybody knows her, my sister is very hard working, she didn’t deserve this,” the sister said.
Mark Hyman, who was married to the deceased for over thirty years told reporters that he received a call that his wife was killed moments after he had left her after dropping off a vita malt.
“We’ve been married for thirty something years, ……my wife is hard working, she would get up in the evening and come out, and everybody in Mocha could always come and get anything from here from her. She was always out-going to anybody,” he said.
The husband said he hopes justice will be served while noting that his wife did not have any problem with anybody.
Hyman claimed that an eyewitness trailed the suspected bandits in a direction towards South Ruimveldt and noted that one of them had on a helmet while the other was masked.
Former member of parliament and community member, Nima flue-Bess said she was driving along the Linden-Soesdyke highway when she was informed on the tragedy.
She also expressed that the deceased was a reliable person and sent prayers to the family and relatives of Hyman.
Bess noted that the unfortunate event was a reminder to villagers that they need to stand together so that the community could return to its former glory.
“Back in the days, nobody couldn’t come in the Mocha-Arcadia community and do anything, and we will return there, we will return there! Nobody aint gonna come in our village and get away with nothing. It aint gonna happen,” Bess said.
