De man seh, “Go bring me a beer and I gon tell yuh.”
De gyal seh, “But mommy seh you mus stop drinkin’.”
He seh, “Bring a ice cream fuh yuhself too.”
Just so, bribery and corruption done start before de child even reach Standard One. Ice cream bribe still wukkin in dis country—only now is not Popsicle, is Prado and piece ah land.
Corruption become so entrenched that it even deh in dem board games wah we does play with we family. Such as Monopoly. Dem boys seh never before in he life de man see so much tiefin, bribery, backstabbin, jealousy and blackmail—an that is just from he mudda-in-law! Imagine wah goin on in real life if board game causing war in de family. Uncle Barry done mortgage all he property, and aunty Babs done bribe de banker fuh pass ‘Go’ twice. And y’all wonder why de tender board always get monopoly scandal?
But de one that buss everybody belly is when dem three old men go by God. De American ask when he country gon done with recession. God seh 100 years. De man cry. De Russian ask when he country gon get rich. God seh 50 years. He cry too.
De Guyanese open he mouth and ask when Guyana gon be corruption-free—God didn’t even answer. He start cryin’! God seh he nah gon live to see dat day.
Dem boys seh corruption in Guyana been deh long time and ain’t going nowhere. Everybody talkin bout fightin corruption, but dem does end up fightin over de contracts instead. One set bribe de next fuh get wuk, then dem bribe de next one fuh do de same wuk.
And dem boys seh… God still cryin’.
