Driver in Corentyne hit-and-run slapped with seven charges, remanded

Kaieteur News – Thirty-two-year-old Avinash Naidoo, the driver of the car that allegedly was involved in a hit-and-run along the Corentyne that resulted in the death of a 9-month-old baby and her mother, was on Thursday slapped with seven charges and remanded to prison.
Naidoo was charged with two counts of dangerous driving and three counts of failure to render assistance charges. He was also charged with failure to stop after an accident and failure to report an accident.
He appeared at the Springlands Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy who read the charges.
Naidoo was not required to plead to the two causing death by dangerous driving charges, but he pleaded not guilty to the other offenses and was remanded until July 31, 2025.

On March 2, 2025, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that 9-month-old Eli Surujnarine and her parents 17-year-old Tushan Surujnarine (driver) and her 19-year-old mother (pillion rider) were on an electric cycle. The mother was holding the baby when the duo was hit by a car along the Line Path Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.
The accident involved a white Fielder Wagon driven by Naidoo of Corriverton, Berbice.
The baby died while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital while her mother Sarita Bedessie also known as Kavita Bedsan, died four days after the accident. The child’s father was injured.
Naidoo made good his escape from the scene of the accident.
