A robust Code of Ethics needed in the Education Sector

Kaieteur News – Teaching is one of the essential professions needed to create a societal culture. By maintaining high ethical standards that emphasize honesty, integrity, and fairness, it ensures that teachers set a good example for students as they grow and become more engaged in our society. We must remember that our teachers and those within the education sector help shape the moral character of our society.

The Mahdia tragedy, the knowledge of sexual assault of students without appropriate action being taken, and the intentional endangering of students by the omission of required safety precautions, are illustrations of serious willful negligence within the education sector. We as a nation should not permit students to be exposed to unjustified risk of injury, whether mental, emotional, or physical. It is very alarming to see that the investments being made in the education sector continue to come up short where it matters most.

During the Burnham period our country suffered from a lack of resources. Most of the issues and risks we faced during that period continue today despite the large monetary investment and extensive training being carried out. The organization structure in place for oversight must be made more effective, and this can only be achieved by having in place policies that are adhered to and that carry serious penalties when deliberately not followed. It is an opportunity for improvement that should not be delayed. Those within the sector have been given the privilege to be entrusted with developing the lives of our nation’s children. We must demand better and hold those who are intentionally endangering the lives of our students accountable. Now that resources are available to ensure that things are done correctly and ethically, we must no longer accept that which is unsafe, inappropriate, and impermissible. The education sector must strengthen its code of ethics in both articulation and action.
