Trio in cocaine bust remanded

Kaieteur News – Three men were on Monday remanded for last week’s Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) cocaine bust.

The defendants, 34-year-old Fawwaz Barakat of Lot 12 Ocean View Drive, Ruimzeight Gardens, West Coast Demerara (WCD), 35-year-old Collin Moore of Lot 77 Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara (ECD), and Martin Gomez of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD), all appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Abigale Gibbs.

The trio who was jointly charged, pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on June 9, 2025 at Movietown, Turkeyen, ECD, they had in their possession 16.784 Kilograms (kg) of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Barakat and Moore, who are both miners, were represented by attorney Bernard Da Silva. Gomez, a joiner by profession was represented by attorney Siand Dhurjon.

The prosecution had objected to bail for Barakat and Moore due to the offence being of a serious nature and that the Venezuelan Gomez is a possible flight risk.

The matter was adjourned to August 19, 2025.

Last Wednesday, five persons were arrested after they were busted by CANU for 16.784 kg of cocaine.

According to a statement from CANU, officers, acting on information intercepted two motor cars in the vicinity of Turkeyen, ECD, where several parcels containing a whitish powdery substance suspected to be cocaine were discovered.
