Kaieteur News – President Irfaan Ali announced on Thursday that the government will fully reimburse the examination fees for eight subjects for all students who wrote this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) examinations.
The President made the announcement while addressing the commissioning ceremony of the new Christ Church Secondary School.
Speaking on the various investment his government is making on the education sector, he said, “You can look forward for the expansion of our CXC grants for the eight subjects that we will pay for and I want today to make it very clear that those students who pay for this year’s CXC, that you will have your full reimbursement for the eight subjects.”
Kaieteur News had reported in April this year, that during a public meeting in Region Three at the West Demerara Secondary School, he had initially announced government would pay the full examination fees for eight subjects for students who would sit next year’s examinations. “As I speak to you now, parents are preparing to pay for their children’s CXC fees. You are already putting aside the money, right? Well, I have good news for you, with effect from this year’s CXC, the government will pay in full, the cost for at least eight subjects for every single child in the public and private school system,” he announced back in April.
This publication reported that, prior to the President’s announcement, a parent would pay around $45,000 for eight CSEC subjects.
