Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – The Islamic Republic of Iran has found itself in a very serious situation with our allies. Clerics are issuing fatwas against Trump and Netanyahu, while the Ayatollah remains defiant towards the idea of terminating the Iranian nuclear program. Maybe the situation in Ukraine is instructive, but the conflict with Israel continues to be a serious concern.
The conflict with the Palestinians has brought forward the voiced concerns of President Ramotar who was also the General Secretary of the PPPC, and he has been and continues to be a very strong critic of Israel. President Ali has also voiced his discontent with the west in a previous broadcast, where he showed what many consider to be signs of anger.
The influence of Islam was appearing to be less pronounced in the PPPC when they decided to import pigs into the country, but the conflict in the Middle East and the recent use of a local religious authority to reduce the importance of a political opponent raises concerns that the influence of religion remains strong within the PPPC. In a surprising comment, the President has called for no weakening of the partnership with the U.S., but one must ask where the PPPC stands on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s current situation. Is religion less or more important than national wealth and the backing of an ally that many in the Muslim world see as a foe closely attached to Israel? After all, calls by the small Israelite community in Guyana to have Yom Kippur recognized as a national holiday have fallen on reluctant ears, if not deaf ones. Is it a sign of “One Guyana” for some and not all Guyanese?
Sincerely,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
