Kaieteur News – The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) on Tuesday approved the symbols of 19 out of 22 political parties seeking to contest the upcoming General and Regional Elections, scheduled for September 1, 2025.
GECOM in a statement said that final approval of the remaining 3 symbols would be subject to minor modifications, the nature of which is in the process of being communicated to them.
“Importantly, GECOM takes this opportunity to clarify that although twenty-four (24) symbols were initially submitted to the Commission, two of those political parties have since joined the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU); resulting in the symbols being included within the partnership,” the statement said.
The commission reaffirmed its commitment to continuous engagement with all political parties as they prepare their Lists of Candidates for submission on Nomination Day which would be held on the 14th July, 2025.
Opposition-nominated commissioner Vincent Alexander in an interview with Kaieteur News following the commission’s statutory meeting had earlier confirmed that among the approved parties is We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), led by businessman and presidential candidate Azruddin Mohamed.
The party’s symbol was initially rejected last Friday by GECOM chairperson, Justice (Ret’d) Claudette Singh, who ruled that the “jaguar” image used could not be accepted.
However, according to Alexander, WIN resubmitted a clarification stating that the animal in their symbol is a leopard, not a jaguar. This clarification allowed the symbol to gain approval.
WIN was one of 24 political parties that submitted symbols for approval on June 19, signalling their intent to participate in the 2025 elections. However, only 22 parties were ultimately approved after Legalise Cannabis and Liberation Movement withdrew to join the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU).
The 19 political parties approved by GECOM are:
Unity Movement – Aaron Blackman
Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity – Jan Fortune
We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) – Azruddin Mohamed
Guyana United Party – Nicholas Ariston Chesney
People’s Republic Front – Ramchrishna Lall
GAMERICA (Guyanese for Accountability, Meritocracy, Equality, Reform, Inclusion and Collaboration with America) – Vishnu Bisram
A Guyana National Service Party – Oral Semple
United One – Rubina Onique Persaud
Democratic People’s Party – Jacob Rambarran & Anthony Vieira
Republic Party of Guyana – Joel B. Hamilton
Unified People’s Party – Orlanzo Raghunandan
Alliance For Change (AFC) – Nigel Hughes
Citizen United – Ron Ramlall
A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) – Aubrey Norton
All American Alliance for Guyana – Omar Shariff
Forward Guyana Movement – Amanza Walton-Desir
A New United Guyana – Mark France
People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) – Bharrat Jagdeo
Unity Guyana Democratic Party – Richard Beveny
United Workers Party – Sherwin Downer
Horizon and Star – Hubert Maloney
Destiny to Oneness – Yanchandra Rambarran
Alexander also revealed that while all symbols were approved, some parties were instructed to resubmit adjusted versions to correct inaccuracies in their use of the map of Guyana.
“The approval of the symbols was subject to those which are using the map of Guyana ensuring that they are using the original map and not a wrong-sized map,” he said.
He clarified that these parties were not rejected but were given three days to make the necessary corrections.
Additionally, Alexander disclosed that some reservations were raised regarding specific imagery used by certain parties.
“For example, there were some reservations about the eagle, reservations about the map—all of which came from one commissioner,” he said.
However, after deliberation, no symbols were ultimately rejected during the final meeting on Tuesday.
With the approval of the 22 symbols finalised, GECOM now turns its attention to nomination day, set for July 14. On this day, political parties are required to formally present their lists of candidates contesting the polls.
