Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – It is with profound concern I write this letter highlighting the dire need for the proper conduct of traditional pyre cremation.
I viewed the funeral of the well-known Buxtonian that was aired live on social media- Facebook on Sunday June 29th, 2025 and was appalled like many other viewers as was evident in the comments how the preparation of the cremation was conducted.
Firstly, it appeared the corpse was in a terrible decomposed state as mourners were heard inquiring of the scent and many were seen holding their nose. One would believe their corpse is stored properly for the keeping of the body for the ritual- funeral service then burial. It seems this corpse had no proper storage and preparation for burial.
Secondly, the manner in which the corpse was handled for preparation of the cremation. It is only assumed because of the state of the corpse the cremation attendants refused to take the corpse out of the coffin and place it onto the pyre, which resulted in the mourners protesting such action.
Thirdly, mourners were then seen resorting themselves to removing the corpse from the coffin, placing it on the pyre, along with the belongings with no protection. As they moved the corpse out of the coffin it was evident the corpse was falling apart. Things were seen falling on the ground, people were seen running and mentioning of the stench of the corpse while the attendants looked on and directed the mourners to fix the corpse better on the pyre.
I would have personally encountered and heard of many complaints of funerals where the corpse is sometimes decomposed and mourners have to endure the stench of their loved ones through their final burial rites, but seeing Sunday’s occurrence warrants immediate address by the government and relevant authorities- Ministry of Public Health and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Health and Safety regulations in this sector unquestionably needs attention.
It is uncaring to treat the human remains with so mindless care, with no proper storage. It is unhealthy to have to inhale such a stench (air pollution); it is reckless to allow the public (mourners) to handle the human remains and a total disgrace to have unprofessional, cremation attendants.
I hope with this letter the government and relevant authorities address this serious health concern as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Reanata Shipley
