Kaieteur News – Minister of Education Priya Manickchand commissioned two new nursery schools at Baitoon and Katu’ur Villages in Region Nine on Saturday.
According to the Ministry of Education, the Baitoon Nursery School project cost $13,780,000 and was executed over an 11-month period.
The new facility is expected to benefit dozens of children in Baitoon and surrounding communities, offering a structured and nurturing learning space that supports early literacy, numeracy, and social development.
“The commissioning marks a continued push by the Ministry of Education to improve early childhood education infrastructure in hinterland regions, ensuring that the youngest learners are afforded safe, stimulating, and well-equipped environments to begin their educational journey,” the ministry reported.
Minister Manickchand, in her remarks, highlighted the Government’s commitment to equitable access to quality education for all children.
“The project also reflects the Ministry’s broader goal of expanding and upgrading nursery education nationwide, with a particular focus on underserved and remote areas,” the ministry said.
Meanwhile, over at Katu’ur, the minister joined residents in commissioning a $13,992,315 nursery school building.
“The initiative, which spanned a 13-month implementation period, is designed to enhance access to quality education and strengthen educational infrastructure within the South-Central Catchment area of Region Nine. This region includes some of the most remote and geographically challenging communities in the country, where education services have traditionally faced logistical and infrastructural hurdles,” the ministry shared.
At the simple yet significant ceremony, the education minister emphasised that such investments are crucial to ensuring equity in education.
“Every child, regardless of where they live, must have access to the same quality of education. This catchment initiative is a direct response to the needs expressed by the people of this region, and we are proud to deliver on our promise,” the minister said.
