Kaieteur News – Dem boys seh Guyana really ain’t a real place. Imagine GECOM wake up one morning, sip a lil warm tea, and decide that a jaguar—yes, a jaguar—can’t be on the ballot paper. Dem seh is because the jaguar deh pon the Coat of Arms, and because the Coat of Arms is a national symbol, and national symbols supposed to get respect, the jaguar must sit this one out.
Well leh we tell GECOM something: the national flag is also a national symbol. Is called the Golden Arrowhead, and it got colours—nuff of them. Red, green, black, white, and gold. Now if we follow GECOM logic, no political party should be using those colours, because apparently, using part of a national symbol is now sacrilege.
So wha gon happen to PPP? They gon paint over all dem red posters? Or APNU gon bleach out all dem green shirt? Is GECOM gon ban all campaign bunting that got black and white stripes?
Dem boys seh soon GECOM gon rule out rice and sugar too, because those things represent Guyana soul. Maybe mango can’t be used either, ’cause that’s a national obsession. And don’t even mention cassava bread.
This decision from GECOM is so mysterious, people checking to see if it was written in invisible ink. It ain’t got no backing in the Constitution, no law, and no common sense.
But de real joke is, they trying to ban a jaguar—something strong, proud and native—but somehow, they ain’t see nothing wrong when some of dem parties using symbols that look more foreign than a winter jacket in Mabaruma.
Dem boys seh it got to stop. GECOM job is to run elections, not to play zoo warden. Time fuh somebody challenge this foolishness in court. Because if jaguar can’t run, maybe democracy can’t either.
Talk half. Leff half.
