“Young entrepreneurs are vital to society, bringing innovative ideas that create jobs, stimulate the economy, and inspire growth.”
By Allyiah Allicock
Kaieteur News – As we continue to capture the beautiful success stories of what drive young people to becoming their own bosses, today we turn the spotlight on Danique Heyliger, a 19-year-old budding entrepreneur and the proud owner of ‘Elite Nails by Nique’.
Heyliger in an interview with this magazine said that what inspired her to starting her own small business was the passion she had for doing nails from a young age.
“I fondly remember getting excited every weekend when my mother would buy nail polishes for me, and I’d spend time painting my own nails. During the pandemic, what started as a hobby quickly grew into a deeper interest, as I spent more time at home practising. I began with a basic nail kit and practised on close friends, gradually improving my skills,” she explained.
According to the young woman, in further developing her skills, she completed a certified nail technician course to enhance her technique and professionalism.
Her business, Elite Nails by Nique is located on the West Bank of Demerara, Region Three and was launched officially in December 2023. This business offers a wide range of nail and beauty services. These include acrylic nails, manicures, pedicures, poly gel, Gel-X, as well as additional services such as cluster lash installation and brow lamination.
Being in the business realm for just over a year now, Heyliger highlighted that throughout her journey, her mother and two closest friends have been her biggest supporters.
She mentioned that they encouraged her endlessly, even sometimes offering their hands for practice whenever she wanted to try a new design inspired by YouTube or TikTok.
“Their belief in me helped me persevere, even during moments of doubt—whether it was struggling to perfect designs or facing challenges in building a client base early on. Thanks to their unwavering support and my own determination, I’m proud of how far I’ve come,” she expressed.
When asked what she hopes to accomplish with her business as she continues to grow and develop, the young business owner said she is hoping to expand Elite Nails by Nique and introducing more beauty services to the West Bank area.
Speaking of ways to introduce new services to her community, Heyliger is of the view that young entrepreneurs in our society are not only important but they help to stimulate the economy.
“Young entrepreneurs are vital to society, bringing innovative ideas that create jobs, stimulate the economy, and inspire growth,” she said.
Further, knowing the hard work it took to have her business up and running, Heyliger in her advice to young people considering entrepreneurship is to never give up on your dreams.
“Learn new skills, stay resilient, and invest in your craft. The road may be challenging, but with dedication and support, success is possible,” she related.
When questioned what she thinks can be done in our society to help small businesses grow, our featured entrepreneur said that there is need for more local support.
“Supporting local businesses through ‘buy-local’ initiatives can significantly impact community development. By choosing local shops and services over international brands, we help small businesses thrive,” she stated.
