Pensioner nabbed with ganja, firearm, ammunition

Kaieteur News – An 84-year-old pensioner was arrested on Thursday after being found in possession of 30 grams of marijuana, an unlicensed 9mm firearm, and ammunition at his home.

The elderly man has been identified as Hubert Campbell, a shopkeeper of Lot 124 Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke-Linden Highway.

According to a police report, ranks from the highway patrol base, acting on information received, proceeded to Campbell’s residence. Upon arrival, police said, “The 84-year-old pensioner then started to act suspiciously and sat on a bench under a shed in the shop. The ranks requested to carry out a search on his person, however he refused and began behaving disorderly. The ranks then warned him of his behaviour and he subsequently got up and allowed the ranks to search him.”

During the search, officers found “one Taurus 9MM pistol, with five live rounds of 9mm ammunition in the magazine.” When asked if he was licensed to carry the firearm and ammunition, police reported that Campbell responded, “no.”

A further search of the shop revealed a quantity of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.

Campbell was informed of the offences committed, cautioned, and arrested. He was escorted to the Timehri Police Station where the suspected cannabis was weighed in his presence and in the presence of other ranks. The substance amounted to 30 grams.

The suspect was placed in custody and is currently assisting with the ongoing investigation.
