Kaieteur News – A 20-year-old man lost his life on Monday night in a boat mishap at Jacklow, Lower Pomeroon River, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said on Tuesday.
Dead is Damion Fredericks called ‘Smurf’.
Police said the incident occurred at about 22:30h and was allegedly caused by 24-year-old Joseph Melville of the Lower Pomeroon River.
Reports are that at about 18:00h Fredericks, Melville and Shane Narine were out imbibing at a bar in Charity, Essequibo Coast. The trio left the location at about 22:10h with separate boats.
“Joseph claimed that after he collected his boat, he drove across Jacklow River heading east, and while crossing he felt a hard impact to the left side of his boat causing his boat to capsize and sink into the river,” police said.
Meanwhile, 41-year-old Roland Ramdeen of Jacklow told police that he was at home when he heard a loud impact. He left in his boat to visit the area where he heard the impact to investigate. While there, he saw a boat that capsized with major damage to the front and another boat that was damaged at the sides. He reported that Melville was there and he assisted him.
Ramdeen reported that he also saw Narine screaming while Fredericks was motionless at the stern of the boat with injuries to their faces and heads.
Narine was escorted to the Charity Hospital by Ramdeen. Fredericks was also taken to the same hospital by relatives.
Narine was admitted and later transferred to the Suddie Public Hospital for further treatment since his condition was considered critical. Meanwhile, Fredericks was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was taken to the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary, where it awaits a Post- Mortem Examination.
Meanwhile, Melville was treated at the Charity Hospital and later sent away. He was subsequently arrested and is assisting police with their investigations at the Charity Police Station.
