A number of schools will be aiming for this year’s title when the Ministry of Education/GGA National Junior Golf Championships tees off on June 27.
Kaieteur sports – The third annual National Junior Golf Championship is set to take place on Friday, June 27th at the Nexgen Golf Academy, located on Woolford Avenue.
The event is expected to attract over 300 young golfers from Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10, making it the largest Junior golf competition in the country to date, with Leguan Secondary School attempting to make history by winning its third consecutive National Title!
The championship, a joint initiative between the Guyana Golf Association (GGA), Nexgen Golf Academy, Westside Golf Course, and the Ministry of Education, is open to all skill levels and features categories for both schools and individuals Under-13, Under-15, and Under-18 boys and girls and is FREE for all to enter.
The top three schools, as well as the top two boys and girls in each category will receive trophies and prize packages compliments of Sunshine Snacks, Guyana Beverages, Sterling Products Ltd. and ExxonMobil Guyana, who will be joining with other major corporate supporters and providing a gift for all participants.
GGA president Aleem Hussain on Tuesday praised the rapid expansion of the sport, noting, “No other country has achieved such dramatic growth in golf participation in such a short period”.
This success is due to the outstanding cooperation between the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the Guyana Tourism Authority, and the unwavering support of our sponsors and business community.”
Office of the Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain confirmed that the Ministry of Education granted approval to the Guyana Golf Association to include secondary school students in this event and has notified all Regional Education Officers and school heads to facilitate student participation.
This competition is part of a wider effort, through the Unit of Allied Arts, to ensure all learners have access to sport, including golf, across all levels of secondary education.
This year’s tournament is made possible through support from the Guyana Tourism Authority, ExxonMobil Guyana, Jaigobin’s General Store, Guyana Beverages Inc., Toolsie Persaud Ltd, Comfort Sleep, Fixit Hardware Depot, Sterling Products Ltd, Pegasus Hotel and Suites, Party Castle, Monnaf Arjune Construction, Madewini Gardens Pools & Eco Resort, Tropical Suite Hotel, and Sunshine Snacks.
