Kaieteur News – The two men caught sleeping in a car they had hijacked from a taxi driver were charged and remanded to prison on Wednesday.
The men have been identified as 22-year-old Shawn Prince, an auto bodywork technician of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara (ECD), and Nick Sumair, a 26-year-old construction worker of Good Hope Phase 2, ECD.
They appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court before Senior Magistrate Sunil Scarce, where the charge of robbery under arms was read to them. Prince and Sumair pleaded not guilty and were remanded until their next court date, scheduled for August 4, 2025.
Kaieteur News reported on Wednesday that ranks had captured two carjackers sleeping in a taxi driver’s car hours after they had tied him up and thrown him out of the vehicle. They were nabbed in the Lusignan backlands, East Coast Demerara (ECD), late Sunday night next to a wooden house. The car was covered with what looked like a tarpaulin and was already stripped of some of its parts.
Kaieteur News understands that swift work by police helped to track the car and the suspects.
The suspects had hired the car on Sunday afternoon at Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice (WCB) for a trip to Mahaica. Speaking with Kaieteur News, one of the victim’s relatives related that when he arrived at their location, they pointed a gun at his head and instructed him to drive. “Dem tell he continue driving,” she said while explaining that they directed him to a lonely area in the Lusignan where they tied him up, assaulted him and then dumped him out of his own car before driving off with it. The taxi driver managed to free himself and get help. A good Samaritan assisted him with a phone call, and he informed his family of what transpired.
