Kaieteur News- Last week, this nation witnessed a flurry of so-called endorsements of President Irfaan Ali and the PPP/C for a second term in office.
No one except the PPP faithful made much of them. Those individuals who were paraded could have hardly represented any major announcement to citizens as all of them were firmly ensconced in the bosom of the PPP for months – some even years now. For President Ali and VP Jagdeo and perhaps their followers, these endorsements were hailed as some seismic shift in the political landscape, when they merely represented a betrayal to some citizens whom these individuals once represented.
We must state clearly, that it is the democratic right of those individuals to choose, whichever party they wish to support, but it did not escape our attention the Saturday announcement by Dr. Asha Kissoon that she was endorsing the PPP. Dr. Kissoon is the current Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly and leader of The New Movement (TNM) – one of the shadowy parties that sprang up at the last general elections. She entered parliament through a joinder arrangement involving her party, the Liberty and Justice Party (LJP), A New and United Guyana (ANUG).
Under the arrangement, LJP was a shoo-in to take up the first stint of the one seat that the parties won at the 2020 elections, then TNM represented by Kissoon and finally it should have been ANUG. Lennox Shuman of the LJP served his first stint and then handed over to Kissoon who should have by now made way for the ANUG. Instead, aided by the party, she now claims to be endorsing, she has refused to vacate the seat denying the ANUG an opportunity to be represented in Parliament.
How could anyone trust such a politician, moreso to even regard the endorsement as anything more than cheap political optics for President Ali and Jagdeo. Kissoon represents the worst of what some Guyanese think of our political leaders and she would find it hard to persuade anyone beyond the faithful followers of her new friends, the PPP.
Her Saturday endorsement also confirms what many political watchers and even ANUG had said that she was advised by the PPP not to vacate the seat for ANUG as her vote was a safer bet than the person who was to replace her. It was also evident that she was procured by the PPP up front as that party used its majority in the House to elect her Deputy speaker denying the larger opposition bloc – APNUAFC the post, which traditionally went to the main opposition.
Much could be said of the other endorsements, the likes of Daniel Seeram, current chairman of Region 4, an alleged wife beater and Dr. Van West Charles, who was hauled before the courts by the PPP when they took office and who also was only recently fighting fiercely to be leader of the PNCR. Then Shuman himself, but we will restrain ourselves today.
As the elections campaign heats up, may we remind citizens that politicians in Guyana will make pretty speeches of how much good they have in mind for the Guyanese people, as they beg for our support. But deep down in their hearts, is where the real truths of their commitments given so easily lies. To support is to vote for, and to vote for is to trust. Every ballot cast with that simplest of letters from the alphabet, an X in the right place, is a deed of trust. Do right, do good, do what is truthful, do what is wise and just and clean. We ask our fellow Guyanese a simple question: what is it that citizens have gotten in return for the last six decades for their trust?
Outside of leaders’ inner circle of friends, family, and other favoured followers, what have leaders delivered in return for the priceless trust they received? Politicians in Guyana have long been liars and frauds and deceivers and now with oil springing from below the sea is here, they have lost their minds. They hide, they lie, they makeup stories, and they mock Guyanese as they kick aside the trust given to them. Some of the biggest betrayers and biggest robbers in Guyana are in government offices and political headquarters.
