Kaieteur News- In Observance of World Parrot Day, celebrated annually on May 31, this publication is highlighting the endangered yet exotic bird (Aratinga solstitialis), also known in as the Sun Conure or Sun Parakeet.
The strikingly stunning birds are mostly yellow with a red-orange face, they have green wing coverts, and blue-green flight feathers.
: Sun Parakeets are native to northern Brazil (Roraima state) and southern Guyana.
They are highly social and are usually found in groups of up to several dozen individuals, they feed on fruits and flowers, commuting long distances between food sources. Noisy, especially in flight; screeching calls are particularly grating and unlike any other parrot in range.
Brown-throated Parakeets in early morning or late afternoon sunlight may appear to glow orange on the face and breast and are sometimes mistaken for Sun Parakeets; note Sun Parakeet’s have very different calls and yellow color extending over the shoulders and back.
The Sun Parakeet is one of the more popular parrots of its size due to its stunning plumage, its extraordinary disposition, and its exceptional quality as a companion bird. They are lively, vocal, and expressive; this is a bird best known for its beauty and its big mouth.
Not much is known about the wild sun parakeets. However, according to information published by One Earth Conservation, these birds appear to be cooperative breeders, with many adults and juveniles roosting and raising young in the same nest cavity.
They also fly very high and you can hear them from a long way off as their calls echo through the river canyons.
A fun fact to note about the Sun Parakeet is that they are native to a small area in northeastern South America, primarily found in northern Brazil (Roraima state) and southern Guyana.
According to information, publicised by One Earth Conservation, to learn more about the birds, the group (One Earth Conservation) has partnered mostly with the Indigenous Macushi people who revere the sun parakeet, though in the past they heavily trapped this bird.
World Parrot Day is dedicated to raising awareness about the threats faced by wild and captive parrots, promoting their conservation, and highlighting their intelligence and beauty. The day was founded by the World Parrot Trust in 2004.
