Kaieteur News- The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has announced July 14, 2025 as nomination day.
The commission has approved the workplan for the general and regional elections. The workplan, which was prepared by chief elections officer (CEO), Vishnu Persaud, outlines the conduct of the polls set for September 1, this year.
“In this regard, the GECOM secretariat is authorised to proceed with implementation of the tasks delineated in the workplan to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner,” it said.
In keeping with the statutory provisions, all political parties who desire to contest the elections, are required to submit their respective list of candidates on July 14th, 2025. GECOM said forms are available on its website at www.gecom.org.gy.
“Additionally, political parties will be required to submit applications for allocation of symbols for approval by the commission by the 22nd of June, 2025. Recognising that the commission has been conducting continuous registration throughout the year since January 2023, a short claims and objections exercise will be held from June 16 to 20, 2025,” GECOM added.
The exercise is in keeping with legal requirements to produce an Official List of Electors (OLE) to be used for the elections. As such, all persons 18 and older by June 30, 2025 who have not been registered, can apply to do so during that period to be included in the OLE, and be eligible to vote on September 1.
“Persons who are already registered can apply for (i) correction of incorrect particulars on their national identification cards, (ii) name change if they have changed their name(s) since they were registered, and (iii) transfers if they have changed their addresses since they were registered,” the commission said.
It said any elector who has changed their residential address from one electoral division or district to another will have to go the polling station associated with their previous address in order to vote in the elections.
