ExxonMobil reaffirms commitment to host 6th Annual U-14 Football C/ship

-32 boys’ and 24 girls to compete for 2025 titles

Kaieteur Sports- The Petra Organisation officially launched the sixth edition of its flagship event, ExxonMobil Boys’ and Girls’ Under-14 Football Championship on Thursday at the Cara Lodge Hotel, in partnership with title sponsor ExxonMobil.

Among the attendees were Director of Sports Steve Ninvalle, ExxonMobil’s Commercial Advisor Okeme Beaton, Head of the Allied Arts Unit within the Ministry of Education Nicholas Fraser, and Petra Co-Directors Troy Mendonca and Marlan Cole.

This year’s tournament promises to be the biggest yet, featuring a record 52 teams; 32 boys’ and 24 girls’ sides with over 850 student-athletes expected to compete. Now firmly established as Guyana’s premier U-14 football event, the championship continues to provide a platform for young players to showcase their skills in a structured and professionally managed environment.

In his keynote address, Petra Co-Director Troy Mendonca said, “I stand here with immense excitement as we officially launch this sixth edition of the ExxonMobil Boys’ and Girls’ Under-14 Football Tournament. Working alongside the ExxonMobil team, we’ve raised the standard of this tournament to ensure a seamless and rewarding experience for everyone involved.”

ExxonMobil’s Commercial Advisor Okeme Beaton praised the partnership and its impact on youth development through sport.

“We’re proud to support this tournament once again. Over the past six years, we’ve witnessed tremendous growth in talent, sportsmanship, and vigor. Empowering young women through sport remains one of our core focuses. Beyond this tournament, we’ve made significant investments in upgrading community grounds, supporting school and regional competitions, and even aiding international tournaments,” Beaton said.

He further emphasized ExxonMobil’s commitment to youth development: “We believe sport is a pillar of youth development and nation-building. Balancing academics and athletics is tough, but it’s been done before, and it’s always worth the effort. We encourage young players to chase their dreams.”

Looking ahead, Petra aims to expand the tournament into a nationwide U-14 schools competition by 2026, reaching more communities across Guyana. In a move to further incentivize individual excellence, Director of Sports Steve Ninvalle announced the addition of a Most Promising Player award for both boys and girls.

At the launch, it was revealed that the championship-winning schools will receive $400,000 in funding toward a school project of their choice. Second-place schools will receive $200,000, third place $100,000, and fourth place $75,000. Individual awards include cash vouchers of $60,000 and gear (football boots and gloves) for the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Highest Goal Scorer, and Best Goalkeeper.

The tournament is expected to kick off on Saturday, June 14, at the Ministry of Education Ground.
