Kaieteur News- A 70-year-old pensioner was murdered and robbed early Wednesday morning at his Lusignan Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), two males dressed in all black with their faces covered with ski masks allegedly carried out the murder and robbery on Deonarine (only name given), at approximately 03:30 hrs.
Officers arrived at approximately 06:30hrs and investigations revealed that the deceased shared a one-story wooden house with his 69-year-old reputed wife.
“According to the wife, she awoke at around 01:30hrs this morning (Wednesday) and went to the kitchen to clean and cook. After leaving the kitchen, she left the door to the hallway open and proceeded to the washroom, where she heard a strange noise. On investigating, she was confronted by the two suspects, one of whom choked her while the other tied her hands and feet and placed her in the washroom. Shortly after, she heard Deonarine calling for her, followed by a commotion in the hallway which eventually ceased,” police said.
Police said the woman managed to free herself and went into the hallway where she found Deonarine lying on his back. She immediately contacted her brother who subsequently contacted the police.
The house was inspected and it was discovered that $500,000 that was under the bed and $300,000 that was in a black bag inside the bedroom, a total of $800,000 was missing.
The statement said the scene was processed thoroughly and the body was examined for marks of violence, but none were observed. However, swabs for DNA were taken from Deonarine’s hands.
The body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, pending a post-mortem examination. Efforts are being made to locate the suspects.
