Govt. seeks to compulsorily acquire East Coast lands for GTE project

Kaieteur News- Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall SC, said the government will compulsorily acquire lands on the East Coast of Demerara where the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) transmission cables will be run to transmit electricity generated under the Gas-to-Energy project.

In a statement Friday, Nandlall said he met with over 70 persons who will be affected by the project. He said the corridor will extend from Goedverwagting to Columbia, Mahaicony, to as far as No. 53 Village on the Corentyne Coast.

In a press release, the Attorney General explained that the government intends to compulsorily acquire these lands and pay market value in accordance with law. He noted that the same process used by the government for similar exercises in recent times for other national projects shall be utilised.

According to the release, the first batch of persons that met with Nandlall are from Goedverwagting to Columbia, Mahaicony.

The release noted that the government will be taking every effort to ensure that the process is consultative and fair; that the affected persons receive adequate compensation and that they are accorded all the protective safeguards guaranteed to them by the constitution and law.
