Kaieteur News- The National Emergency Response Team was called into action on Thursday afternoon, following an oil spill at the Demerara Sugar Terminal’s Wharf, Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
“The National Emergency Response Team, including MARAD, the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard (GDF-CG) was immediately mobilised, and mitigating efforts are underway to stop the leak and contain the spill”, the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) said in a statement.
According to MARAD, the spill was reported to the agency around 17:00 hrs. Oil reportedly started leaking out from a vessel that was moored alongside the wharf to load rice. MARAD identified the vessel as a Palau flagged one, AROYAT, IMO # 9151395. The bulk carrier, according to the agency, entered Port Georgetown early Thursday. An investigation was launched to determine the cause of the spill.
