Dear Editor,
I write to condemn in the strongest terms the local “song”, if it can be called that, derogating, disparaging, and denigrating the Hindu Goddess (Lakshmi, Goddess of wealth), using lewd, lascivious language. The song is blasphemous and is deeply obscene, insulting and disrespectful to females. The authorities must take appropriate action.
Hindus as well as non-Hindus are irate. I commend President Irfaan Ali, Attorney General Anil Nandlall, Minister Priya Manickchand, Dharmic Sabha and others for publicly condemning the singer, using the pseudonym “Baby Skello”. I await a statement of condemnation from other members of the government, the government itself, the opposition, and the Ethnic Relations Commission.
Condemnation is not enough. The singer should be arrested, interviewed, and charged for crime committed against a faith and the potential it has for creating religious violence in the society.
The singer’s words expose a certain mindset how he feels about the Hindu Goddesses and the faith. Hinduism is the only faith in which the lord can be male or female. There are also others who think like the singer in our diverse society, displaying intolerance of each other based on faith and race. There are Guyanese who displayed hate for Hinduism and Hindus out of prejudice and ignorance, wrongly thinking about aspects of the practices of the faith. There are a lot of untruths and misunderstandings against the faith. This was recently revealed following a drowning incident in Tuschen. These misunderstandings about Hindu practices need to be corrected. Hinduism is being smeared with practices that are anathema to the scriptures. This is a propaganda that is hateful and bigoted.
In our current political and cultural environment, it is obvious that people don’t understand the various religions and practices in our country. No faith should be fair game for attack.
In disparaging a God of Hinduism, it is an attack on Hindus. It must be told that the Hindu faith brings solace to countless people in Guyana and almost a billion worldwide. Everyone should be united in condemning the lyrics. One must not allow a response to this abuse with silence. When it comes to religion and religious figures, prophets, Gods, Goddesses, etc., people must be more aware of being respectful. A faith or one’s belief should never be disparaged or attacked especially in a multi-religious and multiethnic society like ours.
Yours faithfully,
Vishnu Bisram
