Dear Editor,
The U.S. and UK just announced a major change in the trade between their two countries. The U.S. President is also working on establishing other agreements by visiting key trading partners to negotiate deals. This is a good sign of business to come and the strengthening of the U.S. economy.
Our government has yet to show a similar initiative. We should also be visiting our partners in Brazil, the U.S. UK, EU, and the Caribbean to push for favourable trade deals. A place within OPEC would also be beneficial. It would be a learning experience and a great boost to our network in the oil and gas sector. A network that will provide greater access to resources and knowledge of the sector. With the current decline in oil prices, storage and output levels are more important than before. The go it alone approach of the VP is misplaced and puts Guyana’s revenues from the sector at risk.
It is important that we do not lose our humility when on the world stage and make the most of the opportunities presented to learn from those more experienced and capable. This applies to both Trade Agreements and how we manage the economy in general. Placing those who are capable and experienced in key roles is an opportunity that has yet to be taken advantage of by our leaders. Success can and must be measured by our citizens access to a healthy and safe (including crime prevention) environment, financial strength and economic sustainability. On these four measures there are significant gaps and risks that currently exist. Will there be a presidential debate where the electorate can judge candidates by their positions on these four key measures or will the country be left once again with only the one-way communication that has been lacking in clarity? Maybe it is time for a change. Let them debate their positions and present their ideas in a forum that will strengthen the proposed leaders and their leadership abilities. More importantly, it will allow us to gain more clarity into what they would do if given the opportunity to lead during 2025 to 2030. This clarity will also allow the electorate to hold them accountable for their future actions. Something which has also been lacking in our country’s governance. It’s time for a change!
Best regards,
Mr. Jamil Changlee
