Kaieteur News- The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) on Friday welcomed Starlink to Guyana, announcing that residential lite services are $11,000 and $7,400 respectively, effective April 21.
In a statement to the media the PUC said that the roll out of the new internet provider is expected to bridge the digital divide across the country, with improved access to services, especially in unserved, underserved and remote areas.
The commission has noted several queries raised by consumers as it relates to rates in the sector.
“Additional information on the offerings and terms and conditions of Starlink (Guyana) Inc. can be accessed at https://www.starlink.com/gy. Furthermore, the Commission has observed that persons/companies are currently offering Starlink (Guyana) Inc. services on various social media platforms at higher prices which are inconsistent with the approved rates of the Commission,” the PUC said.
Such persons may be subject to legal proceedings under the existing legal framework. During a meeting with the PUC on March 17th, 2024 the company’s representatives informed the meeting that there is no agreement with any company or individual to retail services in Guyana on behalf of Starlink. All of the transactions as it relates to the services, inclusive of registration, payments and queries are done via its website.
Members of the public are therefore encouraged to visit the Commission’s website https://puc.org.gy/ for approved telecommunications rates for the respective service providers. The Commission remains committed to protecting consumers’ interests while fostering a fair, competitive, and forward-looking telecommunications sector for all Guyanese.
Meanwhile, on February 10, 2025, the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) launched number portability, enabling mobile and fixed line subscribers to switch service providers while retaining their existing phone numbers. The Commission acknowledges this significant milestone as a turning point in Guyana’s telecommunications sector as it is expected to stimulate greater competition, innovation and consumer choice.
Starlink is a satellite internet constellation operated by Starlink Services, LLC, an international telecommunications provider that is a wholly owned subsidiary of American aerospace company SpaceX, providing coverage to around 125 countries and territories. It also aims to provide global mobile broadband.
