Kaieteur News- The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) and the Custom Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) on Wednesday seized some 18 kilograms (kg) of foreign cannabis, smuggled in barrels from the United States of America (USA).
The barrels were intercepted and searched at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), during a drug interdiction operation by officers of the agencies.
In the first incident, a joint team of GRA and CANU officers acting on intelligence, searched a single incoming barrel at a port facility. Their search led to the discovery of several transparent parcels containing a quantity of foreign cannabis weighing 1.502 kilograms.
Two individuals, Machaia Andrews of Lot 274 Section “B” Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara, and Lemme Campbell of 229 Section “C” Enterprise, ECD, were arrested at the scene and subsequently transported to CANU headquarters along with the seized narcotics.
In a separate but similar operation on the same day, officers examined two additional barrels originating from the United States. This search uncovered 16.4 kilograms of foreign cannabis, also concealed in transparent packaging.
“CANU Officers, whilst conducting a follow-up investigation at Lot XX6 North East La Penitence Georgetown, searched the residence, which led to the discovery of a black garbage bag containing several packets of foreign zip-lock bags, small plastic containers used to package cannabis, and rolling paper,” CANU stated.
Two more individuals were taken into custody and are currently assisting with the investigation.
