Kaieteur News- It is pleasing that the church headed by Bishop Juan Edghill has called on members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to deliver a high level of corruption free professionalism. “We implore to be free from corruption and to fulfill their duties and responsibilities with integrity and diligence. Justice must be served fairly for all…”, said a statement from the Zadok Ministers Fellowship. It is timely and well said, and we commend the group for calling for what is right, a GPF that is free from corruption. Bishop Edghill is head of the Zadok Ministries, and what was said in public, he must now work diligently behind the scenes to get fulfillment.
Juan Edghill, the Christian minister, is also a government minister. A government minister may be about lip service, but he cannot be, not as a minister of God. In his hands, therefore, lies part of the duty for a corruption free GPF where it counts the most, with citizens. The president represents a start, and the cabinet in which he is an influential member is another. Minister Edghill and Bishop Edghill must be one and the same person where the GPF and a corruption free vision is for it. If he is not, then what is he?
The GPF did not reach the stage of sloth, inefficiency, and its culture of pervasive corruption all on its own. The GPF has been pushed and pulled to respond to the dictates of its political masters, which is something that most Guyanese firmly believe. Minister Edghill should not be unfamiliar with some of what has been done to the GPF, what has twisted it to its present state of deformity and broad lack of integrity. It is helpful that his group has called for a corruption-free GPF. It would help immensely, when Minister Edghill fights that battle inside the PPPC Government of which he is an essential component.
The GPF has had its share of coverups, some of which range from cybercrimes coverups to coverups that protect perpetrators that have the right line of connections, and made the right amount of donations. Members of the GPF are not the only ones collecting, and this is what cripples the professionals in this most sensitive of national institutions. When favors are owed to donors, then the GPF is called upon to do its part. There are those high-profile crimes that go unsolved, the cold cases that became that way from the moment the crime was committed, due to who was involved. None of this should be news to Minister Edghill doing double duty as Bishop Edghill. A good bishop makes for a very good minister, and we at this paper believe that Bishop Edghill has what it takes.
If we are wrong, then Guyana’s hypocrite ranks need revisiting, probable adjusting. The GPF is in such poor shape that the last thing it needs right now is more platitudes. More platitudes are bad for the GPF and for the distrusting public. Also, more platitudes have yet more damaging impacts. They give room for more coverups to occur, and serve as a message that the official condoning will go on. Guyanese, already driven to the edge of fear, need a well-equipped and fully functioning GPF to take care of their difficulties and emergencies. A well-equipped GPF signifies that morale in the ranks and the officer corps is at a satisfactory level. There is pride and confidence in the nation’s biggest, most turned to, and most depended on law enforcement institution. When the GPF possess both, then so does the public in its operations.
In view of where the GPF is disturbingly perched, halfway efforts and leadership smoothness are not going to bring it many positives. One thing is certain, the GPF will not be positioned to make the type of turnaround that it should, and get cracking in the direction that it has to go. Minister Edghill, wearing his spiritual hat, has spoken about a corruption free GPF. He is not the first to do so, nor will he be the last. It is time for the talking to ease, and delivering to happen. Minister and Bishop Edghill is well-placed to make a difference.
