Kaieteur News- A 23-year-old man was sentenced to 18 months in prison on Wednesday when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for robbing a police officer.
Videsh Persaud, of Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore who read the charge, which stated that on April 29, 2025, at Quamina Street, Georgetown, he armed himself with a knife and robbed police officer Abigail Valentine of a Samsung Galaxy smart phone valued $35,500 and one purse valued $7,500; with a total value of $43,000.
Persaud pleaded guilty to the charge.
He told the court that he did rob the officer, but later returned the items.
“Me did steal it but me give she back everything,” Persaud told the court.
Valentine said she was on her way to work when Persaud stole her phone and purse. She added that he returned the items after he was made aware of who she was.
“Some person apprehended him and took the stuff from him, when he realised I was a police officer, he give me back everything,” she said.
He was then sentenced to 18 months in prison, and when asked by the Magistrate what his last words were, he responded, “I am sorry.”
