Kaieteur News- Every time flood lash Guyana, yuh does hear one thing fuh sure—“Is de rain! Too much rain fall in short space of time!”
Dem boys seh every time flood water reach yuh ankle, or knee, de authorities does tun instant meteorologist. “We had 4 inches in two hours,” dem does proclaim loud loud, like if dat supposed to mek yuh forget dat yuh just lose yuh fridge, stove, and lil mattress to de wata.
But guess what? Nobody can verify dis so-call rain measurement. Is not like yuh neighbour got one certified rain gauge fuh say, “Yeah man, de govament right.” Nah! Nobody ain’t got nutten! Dem boys seh de only gauge some people using is how much bucket a wata dey pull out de house.
Back in school days, dem boys remember every science class used to got one rain gauge in de school yard. Was part of de experiment—measure rainfall, write it down, do yuh lil chart, and learn something real. Nowadays, de only thing some school measuring is how far de water reach up de step when it flood.
Dem boys seh is time fuh mek rain gauge mandatory again. Every school should get one and every student should learn how fuh use it. That way, when de big ones start holler ‘ten inches in thirty minutes,’ we gon got we lil school scientist fuh say, “Excuse me, sir! Our gauge seh is only 2.3 inches.”
And more importantly, dem boys want fuh know if is really de rain that causing flood—or is dem clogged up canal, secondary an’ tertiary drains that never get clean since Burnham time.
So leh we stop tekkin excuse and start tekkin measurements. Time fuh de school pickney dem hold de line and tell de truth—rain or drain, who really to blame?
Dem boys seh… rainfall ain’t de problem—cover-up falling heavier!
